Review your province01Insured care is not an add-on charge
Do not charge privately for an insured visit or require a document fee to access insured care. Virtual delivery alone does not make a service uninsured.
02No double billing
A government program, employer or insurer may already pay for a form or report. Verify the payer before charging the patient.
03A fee guide is not a legal approval
Medical association guides can inform a physician’s decision. They do not create one nationwide legal price or establish a document’s clinical appropriateness.
04Tax depends on purpose
Some reports or certificates may be taxable. The fact that a physician writes a document does not automatically make it GST/HST-exempt.
05Outcome and refund terms must be separate
Before a service opens, the provider must explain any assessment fee, document fee, cancellation terms and what happens if no document can be issued.
A transparent decision
How an individual quote should work
01Identify the service
Separate clinical assessment from the requested third-party document.
02Confirm the payer
Check insurance, the provincial schedule and program funding.
03Review the fee
The responsible physician approves a reasonable, disclosed charge.
04Obtain agreement
Explain scope, timing, applicable tax and terms before proceeding.
